Ebony Wood * Diospyros Ebenum

A type of Heartwood derived from tropical scrubs found in Southeast Asia, Ebony is ideal to work with, due to its hard and heavy nature. The solid dense makeup of the wood allows for more intricate designs and carvings to be made. Ebony Wood is Black in color with occasional tan streaks in the grain.
For years the bulk of the jewelry carried by Intrepid was made using Ebony Wood, however, because of the change in the large gauge jewelry market and the increasing amount of people selling Ebony Jewelry, Intrepid no longer produces plugs made from Ebony Wood. Our concern is the fact that is a slow growing hardwood with limited sustainability. All Ebony Wood jewelry is available on a limited basis only.

Water Buffalo Horn and Bone* Bubalus Bubalus

Found all over Southeast Asia, the water buffalo has been a domesticated animal for thousands of years. Prized not only for its use as a farming tool to aid with irrigation of land, the meat and milk is a staple part of the diet.

The Horn, made up of keratin, is primarily black in color and a strong sturdy material ideal for tiny sizes and intricate carvings. Water Buffalo bone is a white and creamy color made up of a mineral calcium carbonate. Because of the hollow nature of the bone, small sizes are only available.

We are very careful that all horn used for jewelry is from domesticated Buffalo and no Buffalos are killed specifically for the use of their horn. For these reasons, a limited amount of sizes and designs are available in Horn. Larger sizes are instead substituted with Ebony Wood.

Burmese Jade * Jadeite

Jade has been responsible for some of the most coveted jewelry carried by Intrepid.
Found exclusively in Northern Burma, Jadeite has been the source of desire for foreign kings and warriors throughout history. Believed to contain healing properties, Jade is known for its calming effects on the physique and is believed to help bring good fortune.

Burmese Jade can be found in a variety of colors, ranging from dark to light green, white, brown, black or even the rare shades of pink and lavender. More often than not, pieces will contain one or more colors

All of the jade carried by intrepid is certified Type A Jade, purchased throughout Thailand only several times a year making it available on a limited basis. Because of the political turmoil that Burma (currently known as Myanmar) faces, Intrepid has discontinued all Jade production until the area stabilizes. All Jadeite is available on a limited basis only.
